As managing partner in the law firm of Baum Hedlund Aristei & Goldman in Los Angeles, Michael Lin Baum’s skills as an attorney have contributed to the successful verdicts for the first three Roundup weed killer cancer trials against Monsanto. He and his team are particularly adept at organizing the evidence against Monsanto for the Roundup trials. He served on the most recent trial against Monsanto where an Alameda, California jury determined that Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer was the cause of an elderly couple’s non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and that the agrochemical company failed to warn them and the public that Roundup exposure can cause non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The jury also found that Monsanto acted with malice, oppression or fraud and should be punished for its conduct. The jury awarded Mr. and Mrs. Pilliod $2 billion in punitive damages and $55 million in compensatory damages. Compensatory damages include past economic and non-economic loss, and future economic and non-economic loss. At trial, the lawyers were able to show the jury an abundance of documents that demonstrate Monsanto’s manipulation of scientific literature, its fraudulent promotion of Roundup as safe despite scientific evidence linking the weed killer to NHL, its influence of the Environmental Protection Agency and other regulatory agencies and its refusal to conduct new studies to address safety concerns.
